Welcome

to the Alaska Kendo Club website!

We warmly welcome you and your family to become familiar with our family of kendoists (kenshis).

Here is some information about kendo and about us.

What is Kendo?

Kendo, which translates to "the way of the sword", is one of the oldest martial arts originating in Japan.  By learning how to use the sword, called Katana, one can develop physical ability and mental strength.  The traditional sword fighting techniques were developed in the battles during he 16th century.  Many different schools appeared in the 17th century and stressed spiritual as well as technical refinement.  Kendo became associated with moral training under the influence of Zen Buddhism and Confucian teachings.  The modern art of kendo is the integrated style of those major Kendo school.  Wood and steel swords are still used, but the bamboo sword, called "shinai", is more commonly used for the fighting practice along with various gear.

Who is Eligible?

There is a minimum age of 7 years (unless excepted by Sensei).  Kendo class is open for anyone who is interested in learning the art.  A free trial term is available.

Will I Need to Buy Kendo Equipment?

A shinai, the bamboo sword, should be purchased from the second or third session.  Eventually you will consider buying your own equipment.  The dojo also has armor (bogu) for use, when the time comes, and on a "first come/first served" basis.

Please remember that perseverance is a virtue.  Expecting immediate results will end in frustration.
